Abstract
Dietary antioxidants are thought to be beneficial in reducing the incidence of coronary heart disease. Flavonoids within Scutellaria baicalensis have been reported to exhibit antioxidant effects. In this study we determined protective effects of S. baicalensis on ischernia-reperfusion injury of rat hearts. The isolated perfused rat hearts were subjected to 30 min of global ischemia and 60 min reperfusion. S. baicalensis extract (SbE) were added to the perfusion fluid during the last 10 min of control perfusion, ischemia and the first 10 min of reperfusion. SbE (10 §·/§¢) significantly improved postischemic cardiac function and reduced lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) release and malondialdehyde production upon reperfusion. Throughout the reperfusion period, coronary flow and heart rate remained highest while left ventricular end-diastolic pressure remained lowest in S. baicalensis treated hearts. The cardioprotective effect of SbE could be comparable to that of ischemic preconditioning. Collectively, these findings indicate that application of SbE can protect hearts from ischemia-reperfusion injury and suggest that SbE could potentially be used as an antioxidant and cardioprotective agent.
